Title The WHO classification of malignant lymphoma -- the path to the new version
Publish Date 2015/05
Author Shigeo Nakamura Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Nagoya University Hospital
[ Summary ] The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lymphoid neoplasms has been published in 2001, was up-dated in 2008, and will be updated in the new edition expected to be released by 2016. The WHO classification is based on the disease discovery and accurate description by pathologists, covering the world-wide heterogeneity and geographical distribution of peculiar disease types, such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, etc. On the other hand, precise medicine emphasizes the use of molecular data to improve the precision of patient diagnosis and treatment. The disease entities, subtypes, and variants of the previous version will be re-evaluated and more exactly re-defined from this new perspective.
