| [ Summary ] | While a diagnosis of eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) was made on the basis of the Western criteria, novel diagnostic criteria based on the analysis of Japanese patients have recently been proposed. There are no endoscopic or radiographic findings of the small intestine which are specific to EGE. To diagnose EGE, it is necessary to obtain biopsy specimens from mucosa which is normal in appearance. Corticosteroids are generally efficacious for treating EGE patients. Genetic screening, functional analysis of lymphocytes, and bone marrow biopsies are required for EGE patients with hypereosinophilia, steroid-dependence, or steroid resistance. | |
