[ Summary ] With the progressively aging society in Japan, the chances are multiplied for application of gastrointestinal endoscopy for elderly subjects. Colonoscopic risk factors are increased for elderly colonoscopy subjects. This is due to various underlying conditions, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and becouse elderly subjects experience a high incidence of colorectal cancers and weakness in the colorectal wall. These factors suggest that colonoscopy be performed while considering the general health and comorbid conditions of patients to reduce risks related to procedure related adverse events.
