[ Summary ] The length of the large intestine and clinical characteristics of the diverticula were examined using CT colonography (CTC). The mean length of the large intestine was 153.3 cm. It became longer with age and was longer in women than in men. Large intestine diverticula were found in 32.9 % of the subjects. They occurred at a higher frequency with increased age and were often seen in the left colon. In the very elderly, the large intestine can be said to be characterized by its long length and repeated occurrence of diverticula. In the rapidly aging society of Japan, incorporation of minimally invasive, safe CTCs is important for large intestine examinations to screen for some diseases.
