[ Summary ] The prevalence of ulcerative colitis has increased yearly in Japan in recent times. Less than 20 % of ulcerative colitis patients experience episodes only once. Some of Campylobacter pancolitis may be misdiagnosed as other conditions. Therefore, careful diagnosis is required.
Otherwise misdiagnosed patients may be given unnecessary medicines such as 5ASA over long periods. This is a disadvantage for patients as well as a waste of government funds.
The aim of this analysis is, to clarify the points which are difficult to diagnose to differentiate between ulcerative colitis and Campylobacter pancolitis using clinical symptoms, laboratory data and colonoscopic findings.
The most difficult differential diagnostic situation was Campylobacter pancolitis without ulcers at the Bauhin's valve. In these cases, we need careful follow ups, even though there may be no rapid or definite diagnosis of ulcerative colitis.
