[ Summary ] Conventional ileocolonoscopy and barium small bowel follow-throughs are useful techniques for assessing the extension and the severity of disease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. More recently, novel techniques to provide diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD) have been developed, such as capsule endoscopy, balloon assisted enteroscopy (BAE), CT and MR enterography. BAE has the advantage of allowing direct endoscopic examination and biopsy of lesions which may facilitate the diagnosis of active small bowel CD. BAE may also be helpful in assessment of detailed inflammation and 'mucosal healing' after medical therapy. BAE also facilitates endoscopic balloon dilation of intestinal strictures associated with CD.
