| [ Summary ] | Recently, balloon-assisted endoscopies have been used to technically difficult cases where colonoscopies are required. The efficacy of this technique is reported. Histories of pelvic or abdominal surgery, diverticular diseases and redundant colon are major indications for balloon endoscopy. A multicenter, prospective trial, using a short double balloon endoscope, examining 110 patients with histories of previous incomplete colonoscopy, was carried out in 10 Japanese institutions. The cecal intubation rate as a primary endpoint was 100 %. Median intubation time was 12 minutes. Ninety-six % of there patients responded that a double balloon colonoscopic examination was more comfortable than their previous colonoscopy. Mild mucosal tears without symptoms occurred in 1 ％ of patients. Balloon endoscopy is considered to be effective for technically difficult colonoscopy cases, because safe and certain cecal intubation within short time periods is possible. | |
