[ Summary ] Individuals with familial histories of cancer have a higher risk of cancer than the general population. In these cases, there are monogenic disorders, such as Lynch's syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis.
Hereditary colorectal cancer is characterized by early onset, multiple colorectal cancers, and the development of neoplastic lesions in a variety of tissues.
Genetic counseling is important to identify families having increased cancer risk, to provide information about cancer inheritance, potential risk factors including environmental exposure or a family history of cancer. Genetic counseling is also important to make appropriate provisions, including customized surveillance and to make early detection recommendations for prevention and early detection of cancer.
