[ Summary ] There is no consensus on surgical treatment for Lynch syndrome associated with colorectal cancer. Because the incidence of metachronous colorectal cancer is high in Lynch syndrome patients, extended resection, including total colectomy and total proctocolectmy, is considered to be better than conventional resection. However, increased numbers of bowel movements may impair quality of life for patients. There is no evidence to support prophylactic colectomy for Lynch syndrome patients who do not have colorectal cancer. Therefore, discussion should be undertaken with patients after explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of surgical management techniques. Informed decision is very important.
