[ Summary ] Diverticular colitis is defined as the occurrence of chronic inflammatory changes, suggested by colonoscopic findings and confirmed through histology. This occurs in the luminal mucosa on the left side of the colon affected by diverticular disease. With this condition, the rectum is endoscopically and histologically normal. Diverticular colitis bears close clinical and histopathological similarities to idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease. Diagnosis requires close clinical, endoscopic and histopathological correlation.
