[ Summary ] The incidence of ischemic lesions in the ileocecum is not high. Ischemic colitis, an acute abdominal disease, can also develop in the right side of the colon. Right-sided ischemic colitis is particularly common in patients who are elderly or have concurrent disease. Many patients have severe gangrenous ischemic colitis and require surgical therapy. Because gangrenous ischemic colitis is associated with high mortality, prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential. Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis, a rare disease associated with chronic ischemic changes, occurs preferentially in the right side of the colon and causes calcification of veins in the affected region. Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis is characterized by a dark violet mucosa on colonoscopic examination. Colonoscopy is useful for the diagnosis of both diseases. However, other imaging methods, such as computed tomography, may be required for diagnosis, depending on the general condition of the patient.
