[ Summary ] The clinical and endoscopic features of acute bacterial enterocolitis with ileo-cecal lesion involvement are described. These conditions include Campylobacter, Salmonella, Yersinia, Shigella, typhoid fever, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli and Vibrio infections. Bacterial cultures are necessary to confirm the causative organism for final diagnosis. Colonoscopic examinations are useful for presumption of diagnosis in likely sites. The endoscopic features of causative diseases, and subsequent treatment determinations may also be determined.
In regard to the antibiotic treatment of these bacterial enterocolitis, if necessary, empiric therapy with new-quinorons or fosfomycin is effective. However, some causative bacteria require additional antibiotic therapy after initial treatment. The prognosis for these self-limiting enteritis is generally good when there are no severe complications or underlying disease.
