[ Summary ] The use of magnified Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) has provided the histological and invasive diagnosis of lesions in the colorectum. We used magnified NBI for differentiating lesions in the colorectum on the basis of these lesions' morphology and histology. As a result, we classified types of lesions. This was termed the Showa classification system. After NBI technology became established, methodology data on classifications of colorectal lesions was compiled in Japan. As the usefulness of this thechnology was realized, magnified NBI became a standard diagnostic tool. It would be beneficial to establish a better, unified classification which would be easy for all endoscopists to memorize and determine treatment options. However, numerous complications with this technology have yet to be resolved to establish a unified classification and to develop diagnostics in this field.
