[ Summary ] Gut microflora contribute to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). This review summarizes current clinical knowledge concerning the role of gut microflora in UC and their importance as targets for new forms of therapy. The results of clinical trials with the use of agents targeting microflora, including probiotics, prebiotics and antibiotics, are briefly described. In conclusion, altering the composition of the microflora may improve clinical outcomes for patients with UC.
