[ Summary ] A higher number of treatment options are available for treatment of ulcerative colitis in Japan than elsewhere in the world. However, some of these cases are considered to be intractable. The approval of new antiTNF-α agents is expected to occur in Japan. The use of antiTNF-α biosimilars is an emerging issue. Novel drugs for α4 integlin or JAK3 treatment are being developed in global clinical trials. Collaboration and changes in drug development continue in Japan to close the gap in treatment options compared to those available in the West.
