[ Summary ] The number of cases of ulcerative colitis (UC) is markedly increasing in Japan. An increasing number of cases are being treated by gastroenterologists who do not specialize in inflammatory bowel disease. The fiscal year 2011 edition of the treatment guidelines are reviewed. These guidelines are revised annually based on evidence and expert consensus, specifically in regard to the contents of revision, methods of use for each drug, and treatment strategies. We also examine recent changes in therapeutic goals resulting from the dissemination of various treatment methods, with a focus on mucosal healing.
