[ Summary ] Small colorectal cancers (CRCs) are thought to develop via de novo type pathways. They demonstrate different molecular and biological features, compared to other CRCs, which develop through adenoma-carcinoma sequences. Depressed neoplasms may be precursor lesions of de novo carcinoma. However, when we evaluate the molecular findings of mucosal lesions (dysplasias) and Dukes' A cancers by macroscopic type or growth type, some discordance in molecular findings between dysplasias and cancers is observed. These findings suggest the diversity of colorectal tumorigenesis. Further investigation is needed to clarify this issue.
