[ Summary ] With the changes that have come about in treatment goals we must re-consider the role of "conventional treatments" for Crohn's disease. When previous clinical trials are evaluated in a critical manner, we were forced to admit that the role of mesalazine in treatment of Crohn's disease is considerably limited. The efficacy of corticosteroids as a form of induction therapy is unquestionable. After the initiation of corticosteroids, however, questions may arise as to when aggressive immunosuppression, such as immunomodulators or biologics or both should be used.
