[ Summary ] Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) induce a broad spectrum of toxicologic manifestations throughout the gastrointestinal tract, including the large intestine. NSAID-induced colopathy includes two distinctive conditions : discrete ulcerations with or without diaphragm-like strictures, and hemorrhagic or aphthoid colitis. While diaphragm-like strictures have been known to be the most characteristic feature of the colonic lesions, NSAID-induced colonic ulceration is regarded to be an early stage of stricture formation. When frank ulceration or colitis is found anywhere within the colorectum early diagnosis of the disease, should be conducted an NSAID use should be investigated. Further epidemiological studies and therapeutic trials are warranted to clarify NSAID-induced colopathy.
