[ Summary ] The rates of incidence and mortality due to colorectal cancer have increased in Japan. To investigate the chronological trends in incidence and type of colorectal villous tumors, we evaluated 3,872 colonic intramucosal neoplasms which were treated endoscopically at the National Cancer Center Hospital between 1998 and 2003, and compared this information to that gathered in previous reports. "villous tumors" were defined as those consisting of at least 90 % villous components. In subjects studied, the prevalence of villous tumors was 0.1 % and the incidence of intramucosal adenocarcinoma/high-grade dysplasia was 75 %. The prevalence and incidence rates were nearly the same as observed in previous reports. We concluded that the prevalence of villous tumors was low. However, they may be notable for carcinogenesis.
