[ Summary ] Small intestinal carcinoid tumors are infrequent in Japan, compared to the number seen in Western countries. These tumors are, similar to submucosal tumors, and are difficult to diagnose preoperatively because of their sites of origin. X-ray examination has been the main procedure for the diagnosis of this tumor. Recently, video capsule endoscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy have made it possible to observe the entire small intestine endoscopically. The possibility may exist to diagnose small intestinal carcinoid tumors preoperatively. Furthermore, endoscopic therapy such as endoscopic submucosal dissection, employing double-balloon enteroscopy, and the expansion of laparoscopic surgery employing preoperative marking with point ink, may be possible for this tumor.
