[ Summary ] It is assumed that chronic inflammation is closely correlated with the development of carcinogenesis. An increased risk of colitis associated colorectal cancer has been reported in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. However, it is not yet clear whether chronic proctitis is associated with carcinogenesis. It is generally believed that there is little or no increased risk of colorectal cancer associated with ulcerative proctitis. Despite the fact that more than half of the cancers in Japan which are associated with Crohn's disease are located in the rectum, no increased risk of rectal cancer linked to Crohn's disease has been reported in Western countries.
