[ Summary ] The aim of our study was to clarify the characteristics of colorectal T2 cancers located in the rectum (Rb). The subjects were 195 patients with colorectal T2 cancers, which were surgically resected at our center from April 2001 to April 2009. The lesions were classified according to their form as viewed with endoscopy. They were divided into four categories : (A) Depressed type (the periphery consisting of normal mucosa), (B) Laterally spreading type, (C) Protruded type, and (D) Ulcerative type (the periphery consisting of neoplastic tissue). Category A lesions are those which can be estimated to have developed from depressed type early cancers. In contrast to T1 cancer, depressed type T2 colorectal cancers exhibited lower occupying rates in the Rb than other locations, which suggests difficult questions concerning the growth patterns of rectal cancers.
