[ Summary ] Surgical treatment for Crohn's disease (CD) is chosen depending on the extent and severity of the disease and response to medical therapy. These indications are based on presence of particular symptoms. However, surgery is not a curative option for CD as the disease often recurs in the remaining part of the bowel, and most of patients will require further operations. The indications for surgery are complicated by the wide range of medical advances which have become available in this field in recent years. Treatment strategies are formulated by understanding the natural course of the disease and the advantages of medical or surgical treatments. It must be determined which options are more likely to lead to improved patient outcomes.
