[ Summary ] Acute superior mesenteric artery occlusion is a life threatening condition with high mortality rates. The primary clinical symptom is non-specific severe abdominal pain. Early diagnosis and treatment have substantial effects on patient outcome. Occlusions may be detected with contrast enhanced multiple detector-row computed tomography (CT). Therapeutic strategies should be formulated considering cause of the occlusion and the patient's general condition. Interdisciplinary collaboration is important to improve patient survival rates.
