[ Summary ] |
Patients with long-standing extensive ulcerative colitis (UC) are at increased risk of developing colitis associated colorectal cancer. Annual surveillance colonoscopy has been recommended to properly diagnose neoplastic lesions in such patients. Recently, a new surveillance strategy with targeted biopsies, employing novel endoscopic techniques, has been implemented to efficiently detect neoplasia. Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) is a novel, convenient optical image-enhanced technique, which does not require dye spraying. It can be used for surveillance colonoscopy in patients with UC. We review recent findings on the clinical usefulness of NBI for neoplasia screening in UC patients, and discuss the advantages and limitations of this method. |
