[ Summary ] Promoting clinical research is central to the progress of medicine. Therefore, several action plans for research are now being implemented by the Japanese government to create an efficient system for stimulating nation-wide clinical research. In the field of IBD, the Research Commiftee on Intractable Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, organized by the Specified Disease Treatment Research Program of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, is now endeavoring to build an infrastructure in order to facilitate valuable, innovative clinical research on IBD, by networking Japanese core research sites where skills and resources have been highly integrated.
