[ Summary ] The clinical usefulness of the Fuji Intelligent Color Enhancement (FICE) magnificafion system for qualitative diagnosis of colorectal tumors is assessed.
FICE magnification easily detects dilated micro-vascular structures on the tumor surface. Based on findings of micro-vascular structure patterns, capillary patterns were terned A, B or C. Type A exhibited no dilated meshed capillary vessels, type B exhibited dilated meshed capillary vessels and type C exhibited destroyed meshed capillary vessel. Each type can be compared with the pit patterns observed with conventional magnification.
FICE magnification is useful in diagnoses of histological findings of colorectal neoplasia and in the diagnosis of invasion depth of colorectal cancer of both the flat elevated type and the protruded type.
Since FICE magnification is a simpler method compared with the conventional magnification with chromogrants, FICE can be a supportive method for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer.
