[ Summary ] The introduction of capsule endoscopy and double balloon endoscopy (DBE) has improved the diagnostic ability for small intestinal diseases, providing new, detailed information concerning these conditions. We (at Kosel Hospital) have performed 410 enteroscopies on 212 patients over a period of 34 months. There were 364 entroscopies (171 patients) performed for examination of the small intestine, 34 cases were diagnosed as tumorous (primary and metastatic small intestinal cancers, metastatic malignant melanoma, direct invasion by pancreatic cancer, malignant lymphoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, etc). Since DBE has enabled us to perform biopsies on and treatments for small intestine tumors, it is expected to play an important role in elucidating information on small intestinal diseases.
