[ Summary ] Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a new examination tool for the intestines. With this procedure, a small capsule is swallowed, which takes pictures of the small intestine. The Olympus CE was employed in our institution. This CE has three characteristics. The first is high resolution imaging. Villi, ulcers, erosions, bleeding and polyps of the small intestine are easily recognized. The second is automatic brightness control, which enables the taking of pictures of both near and far lesions. The third is a real time viewer, which monitors pictures during examinations. If the CE stays in the stomach, it may be necessary to prompt bowel movements.
There are still some problems with this system. It takes over fifty minutes to analysis the pictures. Further progress in computer aided diagnosis is necessary.
