[ Summary ] The term “laterally spreading tumor (LST)” was proposed by Kudo, in 1993, to distinguish this type of tumor from other tumors with different shapes LSTs are divided into two groups, the granular type and the non-granular type, as determined by endoscopic appearance.
To determine the endoscopic features of SM cancer, one hundred and sixteen LSTs, composed of cancerous glands, were studied.
In granular type, the specific findings of SM cancer are large granules and fold converting. In contrast, in the non-granular type, we observed fold converting and rigidity of the wall in half of the SM cancers. However, some intramucosal cancers displayed the same findings (20 %). In the study of pit patterns, SM cancers of both type displayed type V1 pits. This was especially, so where SM deep cancer exhibited VN pit patterns.
Pathological findings, of the non-granular type, similar to SM cancer, were observed in the SM layer, including lymphoid follicles.
