| [ Summary ] | Hyperplastic polyps are usually considered to be a benign condition with little or no potential to progress to colorectal cancer. However, recent studies suggest that some of these polyps may be morphologically and genetically distinct and linked to microsatellite unstable colorectal cancers. On the other hand, other reports have indicated that patients with multiple and / or large hyperplastic polyps have an increased risk of colorectal cancer. In this article, we review the morphologic and genetic evidence of serrated polyps occurring in hyperplastic polyposis. In particular, we examine the lesions considered to be large hyperplastic polyps, sessile serrated polyps and serrated adenomas. We also discuss the question of pathological diagnosis of these lesions. | |
