[ Summary ] Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a severe complication of decompensated liver cirrhosis with ascites. After this condition is diagnosed based on clinical symptoms and/or laboratory data, diagnostic paracentesis should be performed to assess the neutrophil count and perform bacterial culture. A neutrophil count >250 cells/mm3 warrants the prompt administration of third‒generation cephem antibiotics. Intravenous albumin infusion might be required based on the patient's condition. Reportedly, new quinolone antibiotics are effective to prevent recurrence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.
