[ Summary ] The peritoneal cavity is a space covered by a monolayer of mesothelial cells. Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum that may occur secondary to various causes. Ascites is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity through the peritoneum secondary to cancerous or infectious peritonitis and other such etiologies. Peritoneal tumors include mesotheliomas originating from the peritoneal mesothelial cells, disseminated metastasis, and other such lesions. It is necessary to understand the pathophysiology of each disease.
