[ Summary ] Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a disease that develops to liver cirrhosis or liver failure unless adequate treatment is administered. Drug therapy with corticosteroids is necessary in principle. Recently, azathioprine for treatment of AIH has become covered by insurance in Japan and the use of azathioprine is expected to increase for relapsed cases and steroid intolerance in the future. The prognosis is good when the sustained normalization of serum transaminase is obtained by treatment, but it is necessary to pay attention because the prognosis is poor in the case of treatment resistance, acute liver failure, and liver cirrhosis. In the clinical setting, it is important to respond to the severity and pathology of each case.
