[ Summary ] Gallbladder cancer is thought to due to adenoma or atypical epithelia, as well as intestinal metaplasia. An established risk factor for gallbladder cancer is pancreatobiliary maljunction. Gallstones, porcelain gallbladder and adenomyomatosis have not been proven to be risk factors for gallbladder cancer. Those conditions have been reported to be associated with gallbladder cancer. In those cases, epithelial damage of the gallbladder wall owing to congestive bile or chronic inflammation may induce cancerous changes through multiple genetic/epigenetic mutations. Obesity has been epidemiologically shown to be an assumed risk factor for gallbladder cancer.
