| [ Summary ] | The gastric mucosa shows a varied appearance following Helicobacter pylori eradication depending on the degree of atrophy at the time of eradication and the time interval since eradication. In some cases, the mucosal features resemble those of an uninfected stomach, whereas in others, severe atrophy without inflammation is known to occur. Endoscopic findings include disappearance of diffuse redness, smoothening and straightening of thickened and torturous folds, a poorly demarcated atrophic border, and map‒like redness. Histopathological features include disappearance of neutrophilic infiltration, with lesser numbers of lymphocytes, and restoration of fundic glands. Map‒like redness corresponds to intestinal metaplasia. Adhesion of hematin and erosions become evident in the gastric body or the antrum as a result of functional recovery of acid secretion. | |
