[ Summary ] Although the disease concept of ischemic lesions of the intestine has been established, a few questions regarding ischemic enterocolitis remain unanswered. It is not unified whether ischemic enterocolitis should be interpreted in a broad sense including necrotizing type, or should be interpreted in narrow sense not including necrosis type. We have discussed the issues related to diagnostic criteria and the definition of ischemic colitis and the differences between necrotizing ischemic enterocolitis and non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia. We have discussed the concerns associated with the conventional classification of ischemic lesions of the intestine and proposed a new classification for this condition.
