| [ Summary ] | Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) have been considered an extremely rare disease. However, in recent years, the number of patients with PNETs has increased rapidly. We conducted a study of the epidemiology of PNETs in Japan in 2005. Next, we conducted a second survey of patients with PNETs who received treatment in 2010. A total of 3,379 individuals received treatment for PNETs in 2010. The number of patients in 2010 was about 1.2 times greater than that in 2005. Non-functional-PNETs constituted approximately 65 %, followed by insulinoma (20.9 %) and gastrinoma (8.2 %). When treating PNETs, it is necessary to correctly evaluate the functionality and progression of the tumors, the presence or absence of metastasis, and the degrees of differentiation and malignant potential of tumors. A new registration system from the Japan Neuroendocrine Tumor Society was introduced in 2015, which may help further global dissemination of Japanese epidemiological information. | |
