[ Summary ] The number of patients with chronic constipation has recently increased in association with the advanced‒ageing society in Japan. Constipation in elderly patients could be difficult to treat, due to complicated pathophysiology. However, it is important for physicians to take care of constipation promptly and adequately, as the disease is a condition that might impair a patient's quality of life, especially in elderly patients. Differentiation of organic diseases, including colorectal cancer, is essential when the diagnosis is made. Diet and life‒style modification are the first steps for treatment. The use of laxatives should be individualized, with special attention to co‒morbid conditions and adverse effects in the elderly. Recently developed laxatives, including chloride‒channel activators, are shown as promising for the elderly patients with constipation because of decreased side effects.
