[ Summary ] The aim of the treatment for chronic constipation is not only the control of defecation but also improvement of the associated symptoms such as abdominal bloating and/or pain. Considering the above matters, there are many patients with chronic constipation who are indicated for the therapy using Japanese herbal medicine with its points of action. In this article, we focused on Japanese herbal medicine as a treatment for chronic constipation and reviewed mainly how to use it while considering several points to be noted. We can speculate that the number of patients with chronic constipation will increase more due to the aging society, and accordingly the demand for Japanese herbal medicine will also increase more in the future.
