[ Summary ] |
Reportedly, gastroesophageal reflux can induce and aggravate a number of respiratory diseases including asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. In contrast, a few reports have shown that respiratory disease can induce gastroesophageal reflux. Therefore, the relationship between these disease entities remains unclear. Nonetheless, proton pump inhibitors are occasionally prescribed as auxiliary agents for the treatment of respiratory diseases. In light of the evidence presently available, this strategy can be justified only for the management of asthma. |
