[ Summary ] We should evaluate reflux esophagitis (RE) and non‒erosive reflux disease (NERD) separately in evaluating changes after Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication therapy. H. pylori eradication therapy shows little effect on NERD. In contrast, recent studies have shown that RE may develop in patients following H. pylori eradication significantly ; however, the relationship between H. pylori eradication therapy and the risk of developing RE is controversial.
With regard to the development of RE following H. pylori eradication therapy, a similar occurrence/incidence rate of RE is observed between patients showing H. pylori eradication and those who are observed to be H. pylori negative. Moreover, the rate of development of RE after H. pylori eradication therapy tends to be high. We should convey the risk of development of RE to patients prior to the initiation of H. pylori eradication therapy ; however, we should eradicate H. pylori without hesitation.
