[ Summary ] Endoscopic treatment is divided into (1) endoscopic resection, such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and (2) nonendoscopic resection, such as argon plasma coagulation (APC) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Esophageal cancer without lymph node metastasis can be cured radically by via en bloc endoscopic resection. Meanwhile, patients with severe comorbidities or local recurrence after endoscopic resection or chemoradiotherapy are treated with nonendoscopic resection.
To use these endoscopic treatments properly, the advantages and disadvantages as well as the necessary ability to perform these methods must be fully understood.
