[ Summary ] While definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is the standard non‒surgical treatment for esophageal cancer in elderly patients, it is associated with a high rate of local failure. Although salvage surgery is generally indicated in such patients, it is associated with a high mortality and morbidity rate. We introduced photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a minimally invasive salvage treatment for local failure after CRT for esophageal cancer, with favorable results. PDT using talaporfin sodium, which was approved in 2015, is a minimally invasive and more convenient salvage treatment than PDT using porfimer sodium.
