[ Summary ] The importance of body composition has received attention among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Here we evaluated the association among body mass index (BMI), poor prognostic body composition including sarcopenia, intramuscular fat deposition and visceral adiposity and prognosis in HCC patients and demonstrated that body composition rather than BMI is a major determinant of prognosis. Furthermore, this analysis showed that variations in the impact of BMI on survival were explained in part by differences in body composition. We must conduct a prospective study to investigate whether interventions targeting body composition such as nutritional support, exercise therapy and the use of drugs to prevent muscle depletion, improve the survival rates of HCC patients.
