[ Summary ] The Japanese Society of Hepatology (JSH) working group for the creation of sarcopenia assessment criteria created its own criteria for sarcopenia including the following : (1) A rapid increase of the number of patients with sarcopenia with the significant aging in liver disease in recent years has been expected. (2) Clinical evidence that patients with sarcopenia have a dismal prognosis has been accumulated ; and (3) The liver is vital for metabolizing three major nutrients (i.e., glucose, protein, and lipid) and advanced liver cirrhosis is easily complicated by secondary sarcopenia due to protein‒energy malnutrition (PEM). In this section, we will outline the creation process of the assessment criteria for sarcopenia in patients with liver disease.
