[ Summary ] Sarcopenia was originally defined as age‒related decreases in muscle mass with low muscle strength and/or physical performance. Sarcopenia is considered "primary" when no other cause is evident but ageing itself and "secondary" when one or more other causes are evident. The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP), International Working Group on Sarcopenia (IWGS), and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia recently developed a practical clinical definition and consensus diagnostic criteria for age‒related sarcopenia. However, when their consensus on definition and diagnosis is applied to the diagnosis of liver disease‒related sarcopenia in Japanese patients, some problems should be improved for clinical use.
