[ Summary ] We have summarized proton pump inhibitors (PPI) with reference to their mechanism of action, characteristics, adverse effects, and points for use. The advent of PPIs was over 20 years ago ; thus, long‒term data on PPIs, including their safety, have accumulated. Potassium‒competitive acid blocker (P‒CAB) is a new acid‒suppressing drug and is more effective than a PPI in the treatment of acid‒related diseases. However, there are no reports on the long‒term usage of P‒CAB. At present, PPIs have abundant long‒term data on safety compared to P‒CAB, considering the long‒term use of an acid‒suppressing drug.
