[ Summary ] In the last few decades, the prevalence of allergic diseases has increased in industrialized countries. Gut microbiome dysbiosis may play an important role in the development of allergic diseases. Environmental and dietary factors in modern life might change the commensal microbiome, leading to inflammatory dysregulation. Animal and human studies have established a role for the microbiota in the pathogenesis of atopic diseases including asthma, atopic dermatitis, and food allergies. However, the role of the microbiome in allergic diseases is less well understood. This review gives an overview of the gut microbiome and its role in allergic conditions, with the aim of applying this knowledge to better understand allergic conditions, theirprevention, and treatment.
